Last year, the Teacher Training cohort collected a bunch of quirky things I say, and “Yay, yoga!” was one of them. Inspired and encouraged, Shaktiyoga New York merch was born.
I’ve been practicing yoga for nearly 30 years and daily meditation for 15. You could say I take the practice of yoga seriously. Its serious business to refine awareness, observe the impulses of the mind, and fortify strength in body. What yoga allows you to do is become more of yourself, your real self, as you work on recognizing conditioned responses, habit patterns in the body, and get better at discerning what serves and doesn’t serve you.
This is an incredibly beautiful and challenging world. I think yoga helps us get better at living in it, rather than escaping from it. So my approach to the practice has a playful side. I say some quirky things in class to lighten the load, to connect to our humanity, and to connect to each other. Serious work needs some laughter too.
