About Anusara

Founded by John Friend in 1997, Anusara Yoga is an energized school of hatha yoga which weaves an inspiring life-affirming  philosophy with the physical practice. Universal Principles of Alignment® are taught in every class and function as transformational tools for the body-mind to restore healthy balance to the body and heart in a profoundly therapeutic and deeply strengthening manner.

Anusara Yoga is a bright and uplifting practice to so many students around the world due to its philosophy and roots in a tradition that celebrates the body, heart and mind as forms of Supreme Consciousness. The teachings embrace that the Divine has become our innermost self, chosen to take our form in order to experience the gift of embodiment. This gift is who we are, in all forms—the light and the dark, the full spectrum of sensation, perception, experience, thought and emotion.  Anusara’s first principle of practice says “Yes” to Life in the way of radical acceptance, and affirms for the practitioner that Life is a gift.

To practice yoga is a way of saying ‘Yes’ to every part of yourself, and practice being more aware of how those parts connect to the world, to your life, and to your heart.

The word ‘anusara’ is Sanskrit for “be in the current, or flow”, and takes its name from a line in a Tantric text called the Kularnava Tantra, the “Ocean of the Heart” tantra.

shaktinipata anusarena shish’yo anugraharhati

Translated here by Douglas Brooks, the text means, “by stepping into the current of Grace, the true seeker becomes able to experience the very Grace that sustains and nurtures his or her every action.”

This unique system of yoga aims to empower the practitioner physically, mentally and spiritually in the deepest ways of creative freedom and self expression.

The Anusara Yoga Invocation

The Anusara Invocation continues to unfold with great meaning to me, even 10 years into chanting it daily. I invite you to explore and contemplate what it means for you to speak aloud the following verse!
